What Dogs Actually Do When You Put Clothes on Them

If you have ever put a shirt or jacket on a dog and watched them freeze, walk strangely, shake, or immediately try to remove it, it is easy to conclude that the dog simply “doesn’t like clothes.”

Sometimes that is true. But fit, fabric, weight, stiffness, and restriction can also make a major difference in how a dog responds.

Fit Changes the Experience

Pet apparel should allow natural shoulder movement, avoid unnecessary tightness, and stay in place without twisting or shifting. A properly fitted garment should not force a dog to change the way it normally moves.

Different Garments Need Different Fit

A soft stretch shirt and a warm winter jacket do different jobs, so they should not fit exactly the same way.

• Shirts: should be comfortably close to the body while allowing easy movement.
• Jackets: need enough room for comfortable movement and warmth, while adjustable closures keep the garment secure.
